Artist Evan Bissell '05 collaborated with Erik Loyer on the creation of "Freedom's Ring," a multimedia experience of Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Evan was invited to create the animation by Stanford University's Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute.
Evan Bissell writes:
One year ago the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford invited me along with collaborator Erik Loyer to create a new way to experience King's most famous speech. Heavily influenced by King in my own life, I was hesitant at first to work with I Have a Dream because it is most often taught and remembered in a way that depoliticizes and simplifies his revolutionary life.
On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, I hope that Freedom's Ring will echo King's demand for the riches of freedom and the security of justice. The project uses King's text as an entry into the longer people's freedom movement, highlighting King's emphasis on equity, economic justice and nonviolent direct action.
